| | A guest’s wandering journey toward trusting God | Sarah (not her real name) has traveled a lot in her young life. And
some of her decisions have taken her down difficult paths. At 17, she
left a relative’s house to set out on her own. She was pregnant with
her first child at the time.
After Sarah lost custody of that
child, she decided to take a sales job that required her to travel from
state to state. It helped her to make ends meet, but after becoming
pregnant a second and third time, she lost custody of those children,
too.
One day, as her crowded bus neared Chicago on its trek
across the Midwest, Sarah decided to stop moving. “I said to myself,
‘You know what? I’m going to make this my last stop.’ I wanted a fresh
start,” she remembers.
Eventually, Sarah was referred to the
Women’s Services program at Breakthrough Urban Ministries. Even then,
her independent spirit was evident. “I thought it was ridiculous that
we had chores, curfews and set times when we could eat,” she says. But
Sarah acknowledges that the structure helped her develop healthy
patterns and learn responsibility.
Sarah is anxious to have
her own place, but says, “Being here is the best thing that’s happened
to me so far.” She wants to get her GED, attend college, and regain
custody of her three children. Even though Sarah’s life has been a
struggle, she is learning to rest in God’s hands. She likes to focus on
Psalm 91:1. “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in
the shadow of the Almighty.” |
