Although the school year has not yet started for most students, Jonetta has nearly completed her first semester at Purdue University.
Since June, she has studied in an accelerated summer program for
accounting majors. “I was excited to go, but I do miss my mom and
sister,” she says. Jonetta also talks about her friends at Breakthrough
Urban Ministries. “They made a difference in my life,” she says.
During middle school, Jonetta attended Bible studies that were offered by Breakthrough’s Youth and Family Services program.
Although Jonetta admits that she was a little reluctant at first, she
kept going back. “I had never been involved with anything like that,”
she says, “But my friends and I were looking for somewhere to go,
somewhere off the streets.”
Soon, Jonetta became more involved in the Youth and Family Services program. She played sports and studied after school in the Nettie Bailey Student Achievement program
(NBSAP). During high school, Jonetta even served as a NBSAP Mayor, mentoring and helping younger
students in the program. “No matter which program I was involved in,
there was always a connection to God,” she says. “I really grew in my
walk with Him.”
“I also learned a lot about responsibility from
Breakthrough,” says the freshman accounting major, “and that’s already
helped me here at school.” Jonetta has some big goals in mind. She has
already spoken to a few contacts about an internship. Jonetta's love of learning is also propelling her desire to eventually pursue a doctorate degree. “I always told my mom that I wanted
to grow up and wear a suit,” she laughs.
