Volunteer Spotlight - Birkey family
|
 |

| In a few weeks, Debbie and her daughter, Kathryn, will begin a third year of volunteer service as tutors in the Nettie Bailey Student Achievement program.
Her son, Noel, will also tutor again. “Noel joined us last year after
graduating from college,” she says. “He goes to work early a couple of
days a week so that he can be at the Joshua Center at 3:00 on Tuesdays.”

Debbie’s
family has learned a lot about working together–and not just amongst
themselves. “It is challenging but gratifying to work as a team with others,” says
Debbie. “We recognize there is value in working together with staff,
student leaders, volunteers and kids to accomplish important goals.
The process is as valuable as the end result.”
Debbie understands what
cooperation on a larger scale could mean for Breakthrough and for those
who become involved. “Many suburban congregations have a glut of
resources – plenty of key leaders and more than adequate financial
means,” she says. “Our family gives of ourselves because we firmly
believe in the mission of Breakthrough. We know that, like the loaves
and fishes, God can multiply and bless the resources we offer him one
hundred fold. He does this in the lives of those we minister to, and in
our own.”
